Why is Pet Oral Health Important?

Did you know that 8/10 pets have some sort of oral health issue by the time they turn 3 years old? In fact, periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition among cats and dogs. It’s common for pet owners to accept the bad breath that their pet has, but in fact, doggy breath isn’t normal, even for senior dogs. If you don’t take measures to care for your pet’s oral health, you are putting them at risk of developing dental disease which directly impacts the teeth, gums and other structures that support the teeth. Seemingly harmless plaque buildup can evolve into tartar and infection. Here are some examples of why it’s so critical to take care of your pet’s teeth:

  • Prevent tooth loss
  • Prevent bad breath
  • Prevent oral pain
  • Prevent organ damage
  • Prevent worsening dental disease

The Importance Of Dental Health For Your Pet

What to Expect During the Procedure

Because much of the bacteria in your pet’s mouth live below the gumline, it’s oftentimes necessary to put your pet under general anesthesia before their teeth get cleaned professionally. This allows our team to adequately clean the teeth in all necessary areas without causing them pain or discomfort. During the procedure itself, we will utilize techniques such as scaling to remove plaque and bacteria, probing to evaluate the health of each tooth and adjust our treatment plan as necessary. In the case that a particular tooth has substantial damage and it cannot be salvaged, we will remove it (dental extraction) in their best interest.

In terms of frequency, it’s recommended that your pet receives a professional oral cleaning at least one time per year.

How Urban PetRx Can Help
